A new government-run Child Daycare Centre opened in Battaramulla on Wednesday, set up with equipment and supplies donated by the All-China Women’s Federation to the Parliamentary Women’s Caucus.
The centre operates inside the premises of the Govijana Mandiraya, the Agriculture Ministry’s headquarters, and includes a preschool unit named “Little Roots.” It is run as a joint project between the Sri Lanka Parliament, the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture, with the stated aim of supporting working government employees and providing structured early-childhood care.
In its initial phase, the centre will serve the staff of Parliament and the Agriculture Ministry, with the Government indicating that capacity could be expanded in future.
The inauguration ceremony was held under the patronage of Minister of Women and Child Affairs Saroja Savitri Paulraj and Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Lands K. D. Lalkantha. The Deputy Chairperson of Committees of Parliament, members of the Parliamentary Women’s Caucus, officials from the Ministries of Women and Child Affairs, Agriculture and Mass Media, representatives of the Chinese Embassy and parents and children attended the launch.
The Government described the new facility as part of broader efforts to make state workplaces more compatible with the needs of working parents.
