More than 5,000 Bharatanatyam dancers came together at Galle Face Green in Colombo on Sunday to set a Guinness World Record for the largest Bharatanatyam dance lesson, organisers said.
The event was organised by Sangamam Global Academy of India and Samgamizh Liya of Sri Lanka, bringing together dancers from Sri Lanka, India and several other countries. Participants, dressed in traditional attire, performed synchronised Bharatanatyam movements under the guidance of instructors as part of the official record attempt. Following the performance and adjudication, the Guinness World Records certificate was formally awarded on site.
Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha received the Guinness World Records certificate on behalf of the performers and organisers. Addressing the gathering, he congratulated the dancers and organisers on the achievement and highlighted the role of culture in strengthening people-to-people ties between India and Sri Lanka. The event was attended by Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar and Deputy Ministers Sundaralingam Pradeep and Mahinda Jayasinghe, with a large crowd at Galle Face Green to witness the record-breaking performance.
Organisers said the initiative aimed to showcase Bharatanatyam’s classical tradition while promoting cultural exchange and unity across borders. The record attempt sits within a broader pattern of Indian cultural and diplomatic engagement at Colombo in recent weeks, including High Commissioner Jha’s twin meetings with Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath and Foreign Secretary Aruni Wijewardane earlier in June and the Indian Navy’s regular port calls at Colombo Harbour.
