The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has raided four train canteens for selling food and beverages above the permitted maximum retail price, and says legal action will be taken against those responsible.
The most recent raid was carried out aboard the Colombo–Jaffna intercity express train. During the inspection, officers found a bottle of water marked at Rs. 120 being sold for Rs. 150 — a clear breach of the labelled price.
The CAA said it has also informed Sri Lanka Railways about the sale of overpriced goods in train canteens, signalling that the operators of the on-board vendors could face action.
The move extends the authority’s ongoing enforcement drive against overcharging beyond its usual focus on markets, supermarkets and eateries, and into the railway network used daily by tens of thousands of commuters and long-distance travellers. Consumers who encounter goods sold above their marked price are typically urged to report the vendor to the CAA for investigation.
