The Cabinet of Ministers has approved Rs. 1,008 million for a three-year programme to renovate 126 dilapidated school hostel buildings across the country, Ada Derana reported.
The project will run from 2026 to 2028 and was approved on a proposal submitted by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya in her capacity as Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education.
The government said 126 hostel buildings in the national school system had been identified as in a dilapidated condition, with maintenance not carried out adequately. The renovations are intended to upgrade essential facilities and provide a “quality and suitable educational environment” for resident students.
The school-level allocation comes alongside earlier higher-education hostel work flagged by the same ministry. Authorities announced in June a programme to bring 55 hostels at 13 universities back into service for around 16,000 students as part of a broader effort to relieve student housing pressure. The latest Cabinet decision extends that focus to the school sector.
