Castle Street Hospital for Women has rejected social-media claims that it performs gender-change procedures on children, with the hospital’s director issuing a formal letter to the Director General of Health Services.
“As the Director of the hospital, I responsibly state that no such activity is taking place at this institution,” Dr. Ajith Danthanarayana said in his statement. He added that the hospital remains open to any investigation into the matter and asked authorities to take steps to correct what he described as false information being circulated publicly.
The clarification followed remarks reportedly made by Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thero during a television programme, which subsequently circulated on social media. The hospital is one of the country’s specialised teaching facilities for women’s health under the Ministry of Health.
The dispute over the hospital’s services adds to a wider pattern of clergy-led claims that the government and health authorities have been forced to push back on through formal denials. Recent months have seen authorities issue similar reassurances on monk disrobement cases and on operational allegations that hospital directors and ministry officials have countered through statutory channels rather than media debate.
