The Colombo Magistrate’s Court on Friday ordered the corruption plaint filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) against Member of Parliament Chamara Sampath Dassanayake to be recalled on November 3.
The case was taken up before Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama, with CIABOC informing the court that its investigation into the allegations is still ongoing, Ada Derana reported. The Chief Magistrate directed the Bribery Commission to report on the progress of its investigation when the matter is recalled on November 3, 2026.
The complaint alleges that during his tenure as Chief Minister of the Uva Provincial Council, Dassanayake caused a loss of more than Rs. 17.3 million to the government by prematurely withdrawing fixed deposits belonging to the Provincial Council from bank accounts.
The CIABOC plaint is a separate legal track from the parliamentary conduct cases against Dassanayake earlier this year. He was removed from the parliamentary chamber by the Speaker in May and was the subject of an opposition motion over a foreign trip that was later resolved when his travel ban was lifted. Those proceedings related to his conduct as a sitting MP, while Friday’s case concerns alleged financial misconduct during his earlier Uva Provincial Council role.
