Colombo Additional Magistrate Lahiru Silva has ordered Keselwatta Police to obtain and analyse the telephone records of a Grama Niladhari (GN) suspected of issuing certification documents for paid bail guarantors in the case against former SriLankan Airlines Chief Executive Officer Kapila Chandrasena.

The order was made after four suspects — including Perumal Ganesh, a domestic worker at the Colombo residence of former cricket captain Aravinda de Silva — were produced in court over allegations of presenting fake bail guarantors, The Island reported.

Police told the court that investigators uncovered 17 GN certificates issued within a five-month period to just two individuals, Mohamed Rizwan and Mohamed Ishan, who allegedly acted as guarantors in multiple bail applications. Rizwan obtained 10 certificates and Ishan seven, all used in court proceedings — raising suspicions of an organised racket. The Magistrate directed that the GN’s phone data from January to date be examined.

Rizwan, Ishan and Ariya Tissa de Silva — all residents of Sanchi Arachchiwatte near the Aluthkade courts complex — are alleged to have provided cash and personal guarantees for Chandrasena’s bail, which the Colombo Fort Magistrate granted on May 5 under conditions including Rs. 500,000 cash and two Rs. 10 million sureties.

Perumal Ganesh signed the cash bail guarantee and was identified during an identification parade on Thursday (May 15) by prison officials, the Crime Branch of Keselwatta Police told court, led by Sub-Inspector K.W.D. Anuruddha. Police also objected to bail for the four suspects, noting investigations into Chandrasena’s death on May 8 remain unresolved.

Defence counsel rejected the allegations, arguing their clients were only present to facilitate bail and no direct charges had been established. Magistrate Silva further remanded the four suspects until May 20 and directed police to submit a detailed summary of evidence.

The order is the latest in a fast-moving bail-fraud track that now includes the original two paid sureties remanded on May 12, a 74-year-old broker arrested by the CCIB on May 12, and three further suspects remanded on May 13. Magistrate Lahiru Silva is handling the bail-fraud thread, while Chief Magistrate Asanga Bodaragama oversees the substantive Airbus accountability case.
