Colombo Colts Cricket Club have claimed the premier First-Class cricket championship, ending a 14-year title drought and securing only their fourth major honour in the club’s 150-year history.
The triumph was anchored by veteran internationals Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews, who “rolled back the years, leading from the front.” Chandimal accumulated over 800 runs across the season, delivering a decisive 144 in the final against Nondescripts Cricket Club, who had posted 431.
Mathews contributed crucial innings throughout the campaign, with spinner Akila Dananjaya controlling opposition batters. Pace bowlers Sangeeth Cooray, Kavishka Anjula, Dilshan Madushanka and Dunith Wellalage provided key breakthroughs at pivotal moments. Captain Dananjaya Lakshan led with steady composure.
Mathews spoke of the dressing room’s cohesion, saying there was “little doubt” the title would come to Colts given the squad’s singular focus.
The club honoured ground staff with cash awards, emphasising the team dimension beyond the boundary. The championship run was underpinned by professional sponsorship and three-year player contracts — a structural investment that bore fruit with the title.
Chandimal is currently representing the Quetta Gladiators in PSL 2026, while Madushanka features for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL.
