A coroner attached to the Ragama (North Colombo) Teaching Hospital has been arrested by investigative officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) for accepting a Rs. 100,000 bribe in exchange for releasing a judicial medical inquest report.
The suspect, identified as Sudarshana Sri Lal Indrajith Dissanayake, was arrested on Thursday following a complaint lodged by a resident of Mount Lavinia, the Daily Mirror reported. He had allegedly demanded the bribe in exchange for releasing the inquest report on a person who died at the Ragama Hospital on December 28, 2025.
The investigation revealed that the coroner had accepted the Rs. 100,000 on June 8, 2026 and handed over the inquest report. He was subsequently taken into custody after reporting to the Commission. Charges have been laid against him for demanding and accepting public funds under illegal circumstances.
The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court for further legal proceedings.
The arrest adds to the running pace of CIABOC enforcement on routine public-service corruption, days after the commission disclosed that it received 3,349 bribery complaints and arrested 70 suspects between January and April. Hospital-side corruption cases against named officials have included a separate Mullaitivu Hospital accountant and assistant taken in over a Rs. 30,000 demand in April.
