The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has stated that there are currently no plans to discontinue the QR code-based national fuel quota system.
The QR system, operated through the National Fuel Pass, was introduced in 2022 at the height of Sri Lanka’s economic crisis, when acute fuel shortages left motorists queuing for days. By assigning each registered vehicle a weekly quota linked to a unique QR code, the scheme was designed to ration limited supplies fairly and to curb hoarding and black-market sales.
With fuel supplies since stabilising, there has been periodic public discussion about whether the quota system remains necessary. The CPC’s latest statement addresses that speculation, confirming that the mechanism will stay in place for the time being.
Officials have previously indicated that any decision to wind down the system would be taken gradually and in line with supply conditions. For now, motorists will continue to register and refuel using their allocated QR codes.
