Four schools in the Deniyaya education zone have been temporarily closed for two days after a viral disease similar to influenza began spreading within the area covered by the local Medical Officer of Health Division.
Deniyaya National School, Deniyaya Saint Matthew’s Bilingual School, Deniyaya Rajapaksa Vidyalaya and the Siddhartha Primary School in Pallegama will remain shut on May 7 and May 8, with classes scheduled to resume thereafter.
The closure was authorised on the instructions of the Southern Provincial Governor’s Office. Deniyaya Zonal Director of Education Nishaka Hettigoda said the move was intended to prevent the further spread of the virus among schoolchildren.
Health officials have not provided a case count or named the specific pathogen, but the description of an “influenza-like” outbreak follows the standard precautionary protocol used by zonal education authorities when respiratory illness clusters are reported in school populations.
