A 24-year-old motorcyclist from Meerakeni, Eravur, has been remanded until May 6 after a video showing him riding dangerously without a helmet circulated on social media, police said.
Officers from Eravur Police arrested the suspect on Wednesday, April 29, after the clip showed him on Jinnah Cross Road within the Eravur police division with two pillion passengers, all three of them riding without helmets. Investigations confirmed the location and identified the rider, who was produced before court on Thursday, April 30.
The case adds to a recent run of viral-clip prosecutions in which Sri Lankan police have used social-media footage as the basis for traffic and reckless-driving charges. Helmet use is mandatory under the Motor Traffic Act for both rider and pillion passenger.
