A Ukrainian national has been remanded until April 22 after being arrested in Mount Lavinia on the night of April 12 for allegedly assaulting bystanders and a police officer, Police Spokesman confirmed on April 13.
According to police, the woman was arrested over alleged assault, robbery, and obstructing police officers during an incident reported outside a restaurant in Mount Lavinia. Video footage of the incident went viral on social media, showing the woman striking multiple individuals including a police officer who attempted to restrain her.
The suspect, who has been residing in Sri Lanka for approximately 12 years, was produced before court following her arrest by officers on night mobile patrol duty. The court ordered her remanded until April 22 while further investigations are carried out.
Police confirmed that the Sri Lankan woman who was allegedly assaulted during the incident has been referred for medical treatment.
The incident drew widespread attention on social media during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year season, a period when Sri Lanka typically sees increased tourism activity and festive celebrations across the country.
