The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on Tuesday (April 28) arrested a former Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Motor Traffic in connection with a corruption-related offence.
According to Newswire, the suspect was taken into custody over the alleged issuance of number plates for a vehicle that did not hold a valid initial registration. The official is currently serving as a commissioner at the Department of Probation and Child Care Services in Battaramulla.
She is due to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
The arrest is a separate accountability track from the parallel debate over the Department of Motor Traffic’s RFID-enabled number plate procurement that the Committee on Public Finance has been examining for procedural irregularities. CIABOC’s action focuses specifically on alleged personal misconduct in the issuance of plates outside the registration system, rather than the broader plate-procurement policy.
