Former Galle District Member of Parliament Sampath Athukorala was hospitalised on Saturday after being attacked with a sharp weapon in the Bambrawana area of Pitigala.

Police said the incident stemmed from a personal dispute. One suspect has been arrested in connection with the assault.

Athukorala, who also served as the former Galle District Coordinating Committee Chairman, was admitted to hospital for treatment. Further details about the severity of his injuries have not been released.

The attack is the latest in a series of incidents involving current and former politicians in recent weeks. Former MP Chandana Kathriarachchi was arrested earlier this month after military-grade weapons were found at his residence.

Police investigations into the Athukorala attack are continuing.
