Galle Police on Thursday arrested a 32-year-old male teacher employed by a leading international school in the city after CCTV footage circulated on social media showed him spraying red ink on the backs of female students wearing white school uniforms.

The suspect, a resident of Kotte, had joined the international school about a month ago, investigators said. The incident took place at Sarewantukade Junction in Galle, where he sprayed multiple schoolgirls in public. Surveillance footage from cameras in the area triggered widespread outrage online and led to the police investigation.

Officers from Galle Police, working with the Police Intelligence Unit, traced and detained the suspect. He was due to be produced before the Galle Additional Magistrate by the Children and Women’s Bureau of Galle Police, the unit responsible for offences against women and minors.

Police did not disclose any motive for the attack at the time of filing.
