Sri Lanka has extended the submission deadline for its Request for Information (RFI) on green hydrogen and green ammonia projects to 19 June at 3 pm local time, the Board of Investment (BoI) said. The original deadline had been 5 June.
“We have extended the submission deadline for the Request for Information (RFI) on the development of Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia projects in Sri Lanka,” the BoI said, EconomyNext reported.
Qualified local and international investors, developers and operators are being invited to submit project concepts in three areas: green hydrogen and ammonia manufacturing; export terminals and storage facilities; and green hydrogen component manufacturing. Eligible projects may benefit from BoI facilitation that includes fiscal incentives, infrastructure support and regulatory facilitation.
The exercise is anchored in Sri Lanka’s national targets of generating 70 per cent of electricity through renewable sources by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality in power generation by 2050. The northern and eastern provinces have been identified as the primary catchment for the sector’s wind and solar resource base.
The RFI was originally issued on 6 May as the first procurement-stage signal for a sector the government has framed as a long-term renewable export opportunity worth up to USD 1 billion in annual revenue by 2030. It remains a market-soundings exercise rather than a binding tender; the BoI is gauging developer interest and project structure before any formal procurement round.
The two-week deadline extension comes as the government accelerates work on the 300 MW standalone battery storage cluster and the related 150 MW Mannar wind plus battery project at Kondachchi approved with an Asian Development Bank grant. Deputy Power Minister Arkam Ilyas this week separately said an additional 300 MW of wind and solar capacity would be connected to the grid within 18 months, sitting alongside any hydrogen-export build-out that emerges from the BoI’s market sounding.
