Prime Minister and Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya launched the first phase of the Human Resources Module of the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) and the pilot of the e-Thaksalawa Learning Management System (LMS) at Temple Trees on Sunday, marking the broadest digital overhaul of the school administration system to date.
Speaking at the launch, the Prime Minister said accurate data, effective policies and technological support were essential to deliver an education system that offered equal opportunities for all students across Sri Lanka, Ada Derana reported. The NEMIS platform consolidates information from national and provincial schools into a single network, replacing the separate provincial systems that have run in parallel for years.
The first phase will handle teacher transfers in the Sabaragamuwa, Western, Southern and North Western provinces, with island-wide expansion and the inclusion of all academic staff planned in subsequent phases. The Education Ministry expects the integrated platform to improve transparency and efficiency in teacher recruitment, transfers and promotions — long-standing pain points cited by both unions and provincial directors.
Amarasuriya framed digitalisation as central to delivering transparent and efficient public services, but stressed that technology was intended to strengthen the role of teachers, not replace them. The e-Thaksalawa LMS pilot will support teaching, learning and student assessment, and expand access to quality educational resources for underprivileged schools and children with special educational needs, she said.
The initiative was delivered jointly by the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Digital Economy, the Task Force for Digital Transformation in Education, provincial education authorities and the Sri Lanka Air Force. It follows the Prime Minister’s recent pledge to extend the Rotary–Education Ministry smart-classroom partnership to 100 schools, and the grade-six reform package scheduled for January 2027. The Government has also moved in recent weeks on medical education and graduate teacher recruitment.
