The Department of Meteorology said the prevailing showery conditions over Sri Lanka are expected to continue for the next few days due to a low-level atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of the island.
Fairly heavy rainfall above 75mm is likely at some places in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, Southern and North-Central provinces, the department said in its Thursday advisory. Showers or thundershowers will occur at most places of the island after 1.00 pm, with morning showers also likely in the Western, North-Western and Northern provinces and in Trincomalee, Galle and Matara districts.
Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces during the early hours of the morning. The general public has been requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damage from temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
The new advisory follows a 100mm forecast issued on Wednesday under the same disturbance pattern. The persistent system precedes the formal onset of the south-west monsoon, which the Met Department signalled last week is likely to bring lower-than-usual rainfall under residual El Niño conditions.
