The Homagama Police Traffic Division has arrested 16 people and taken 16 illegally modified motorcycles into custody in a targeted crackdown, Ada Derana reported.
The arrests were made at several locations across the Homagama area. Police said the operation focused on motorcycles that had been altered from their original condition and were being ridden at excessive speeds while generating excessive noise.
Illegally modified motorcycles — often fitted with altered exhausts, engines or bodywork — are a recurring public nuisance and road-safety concern in Sri Lanka’s suburbs, drawing frequent complaints from residents over noise and reckless riding. Police have periodically mounted enforcement drives to detect and impound such vehicles.
The suspects are expected to be produced before court. Traffic officers have warned that modifications breaching vehicle regulations can result in fines and the seizure of the motorcycle, and have urged riders to keep their vehicles in the condition approved at registration.
