A 72-year-old woman was killed after being struck by an SUV in the Elawella area of Horana on Saturday evening, Newswire reported.
Police said the pedestrian was crossing the road when the vehicle hit her. She sustained serious injuries and was admitted to Horana Hospital, where she later succumbed. The victim was identified as a resident of the Horana area.
Officers arrested the SUV driver at the scene. Investigations confirmed that he had allegedly been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. Horana Police are conducting further inquiries.
The fatal Horana crash came as Hanwella Police were investigating a separate hit-and-run that killed two women earlier the same day, bringing the Saturday alcohol-linked pedestrian death toll in the western Colombo–Kalutara belt to three.
