A woman has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of her husband in the Arambakanda area of the Horana Police Division in the early hours of Sunday, Newswire reported.
The victim, a 49-year-old resident of Arambakanda, was found dead inside the couple’s home following an attack with a sharp weapon during a domestic dispute, the report said. Police told Newswire that initial investigations indicate the suspect — the victim’s wife — allegedly carried out the assault during an argument at the residence.
The suspect was taken into custody by Horana Police and further investigations are under way. The Horana Magistrate’s Court is expected to take up the case in the coming days following the customary post-mortem and inquest. No information has been released on the couple’s age difference, the household composition or the immediate trigger for the argument.
The case follows a string of separately reported violent incidents in the Horana police division in recent weeks, including the Rs. 30.5 million armed bank robbery on June 3 at a state bank branch and the subsequent arrests of the branch’s assistant manager and security officer. Horana sits about 30 kilometres south-east of Colombo on the Old Road to Ratnapura.
Domestic violence remains a recurring concern in Sri Lanka’s criminal-justice cycle. The National Child Protection Authority and the Ministry of Women have used recent legislative windows to push for tighter domestic-violence enforcement amendments, and the Sri Lanka Police’s Women and Children’s Bureau Desks have been the lead operational unit for the case-management track. The number of female-on-male and male-on-female homicides reported in domestic disputes has remained broadly stable across the cycle, with male victims under-reported by household.
