Police have recovered 43 military rounds from an area close to a bathing site frequently used by residents in the Hurulu Wewa area of Galenbindunuwewa.
According to Galenbindunuwewa Police, the ammunition — described as unusable, foreign-manufactured rounds — was discovered during a search operation in the locality. The find near a spot regularly used by the public has prompted a police investigation into how the rounds came to be there.
Officers have not yet established the origin of the ammunition or how long it had been at the site. Investigations are continuing to determine whether the rounds were discarded, lost or stored deliberately.
Hurulu Wewa lies in the North Central Province, an area that saw military activity during Sri Lanka’s decades-long civil conflict, which ended in 2009. Recoveries of old or unused ordnance are periodically reported across former operational zones.
Police have urged members of the public who come across suspected ammunition or explosives to avoid handling it and to report the discovery to the nearest police station immediately.
