Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Muhammad Anis Matta held high-level bilateral talks in Colombo on Friday with Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath and Deputy Foreign Minister Arun Hemachandra, NewsFirst reported.

Matta is on an official visit to Sri Lanka. The two sides exchanged views on strengthening political, economic, cultural and bilateral ties, the Foreign Ministry said.

Minister Herath said Sri Lanka “remains firmly committed to elevating its longstanding partnership with Indonesia to a higher level,” according to NewsFirst’s account of the meeting.

In a separate discussion between Deputy Minister Hemachandra and his Indonesian counterpart, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation, citing what was described as the “enduring friendship” between the two nations.

No specific agreements, memoranda of understanding, or trade targets were disclosed in the readout. Sri Lanka and Indonesia maintain working-level cooperation across tourism, education and ASEAN-aligned diplomacy, but bilateral trade has historically lagged the potential between the two Indian Ocean partners.

The visit comes weeks after the Indonesian Navy training ship KRI Bima Suci docked in Colombo on a goodwill call. Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, has been an active diplomatic actor amid the ongoing Middle East crisis, though the readout did not indicate whether regional security featured in the Colombo talks.
