The Joint Opposition has requested an immediate disciplinary inquiry against the Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), Ranga Dissanayake, alleging that the Commission has adopted a lenient approach towards corruption complaints involving influential figures linked to the current government, Newswire reported.
The request was made in a letter addressed to CIABOC Chairman W.M.N.P. Iddawela signed by several Joint Opposition leaders, including former Foreign Minister G.L. Peiris. The Opposition alleged that the Commission had failed to act on a number of complaints involving senior public officials and political figures, raising concerns over the equal application of the law.
Among the matters highlighted in the letter were the circumstances surrounding the death of former SriLankan Airlines Chairman Kapila Chandrasena, complaints relating to Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne, and allegations concerning former Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody. The letter also questioned the progress of investigations into alleged irregularities linked to coal imports and claimed that several written complaints against individuals connected to the current administration had not been properly investigated.
The Joint Opposition has requested a meeting with the CIABOC Chairman to present further details and urged the Commission to take prompt action on the concerns raised. The June 13 letter follows a similar May 28 request by the same coalition and continues an opposition pattern of public pressure on the anti-corruption agency that has also included G.L. Peiris’s earlier “political tool” framing and the SLPP’s May 25 demand for the Director General’s removal in connection with the Chandrasena bail case.
