Sri Lanka’s Development Lotteries Board has awarded the country’s largest-ever lottery prize — Rs. 629,855,919.60 — to the winner of the “Kapruka” lottery draw.

The historic cheque, worth nearly Rs. 630 million, was officially handed over at the Development Lotteries Board auditorium on Thursday. The prize eclipses all previous lottery payouts in Sri Lanka’s history.

Sales agent recognised

During the ceremony, the sales agent who sold the winning ticket was also recognised and awarded incentives for their role in the record sale. Cheques were additionally presented to several other winners, including newly crowned millionaires from districts across the country who won through other Development Lotteries Board draws.

Festive timing

The record payout comes just days before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year (Avurudu) celebrations on April 13-14, adding to the festive mood despite the broader economic pressures facing the country from the Middle East energy crisis and rising living costs.

The Development Lotteries Board operates multiple lottery schemes across Sri Lanka, with the Kapruka draw among its most popular products.
