A 28-year-old man employed at the Kandy National Hospital has been hospitalised after being shot in the Gohagoda area of Katugastota in the early hours of Monday morning, police said.

The shooting took place at around 2.30am, according to Newswire and Ada Derana. The victim, a resident of Hanthana, has been identified as a janitorial supervisor at the National Hospital in Kandy and has been admitted to Kandy Hospital for treatment.

Police said the cause of the shooting is yet to be ascertained and the suspects have not been identified. Katugastota Police are conducting investigations.

The incident is the latest in a string of pre-dawn shootings around suburban Kandy and the Western Province in recent weeks, which have drawn renewed scrutiny of organised-crime networks operating across the central hills. No motive โ€” personal, workplace or otherwise โ€” has so far been disclosed.
