A 55-year-old man has been reported missing after being swept away by strong sea currents while bathing at Katukurunda Beach in Kalutara on Sunday evening, police said.
Kalutara South Police said the missing man, a resident of Katukurunda, had gone to the beach with his children and other relatives at the time of the incident. He was caught in a strong wave and dragged out to sea while bathing.
A search operation is underway to locate him.
The incident comes as the Department of Meteorology has issued a lightning and heavy rainfall advisory for May 3 covering Western, Southern and several other provinces, with rough sea conditions reported along the south-western coast.
