A 25-year-old man was arrested by officers of the Police Special Task Force (STF) for allegedly carrying a plastic pistol among a crowd at a May Day rally near the Kilinochchi Depot Junction on May 1, Newswire reported on Friday.

The suspect, a resident of the Kilinochchi area, was handed over to the Kilinochchi Police station for further investigation.

Police said preliminary inquiries established that the pistol-shaped object was a plastic replica and could not fire live rounds. The arrest came amid heightened security deployments around political and trade-union rallies across the country for the Labour Day weekend.

No further details on the rally affiliation, the suspect’s possible motive, or any planned charges were released.
