A man has been arrested in Kiribathgoda in possession of a large quantity of illegal narcotics, Sri Lanka Police said on Sunday (July 19).
According to Ada Derana, the suspect was found with more than 6kg of crystal methamphetamine, known locally as “Ice,” along with 2kg of heroin and 5,000 narcotic pills. The combined haul represents a significant seizure by anti-narcotics officers.
Police have not yet released the identity of the suspect or details of how the drugs were detected. Investigations are continuing.
The seizure comes amid a sustained crackdown on the narcotics trade across Sri Lanka, with police and the Police Narcotics Bureau reporting frequent detections of methamphetamine and heroin shipments in the Western Province, the country’s most densely populated region. Authorities have repeatedly identified crystal methamphetamine as a growing concern alongside heroin, which has long dominated the local drug market. Suspects arrested with commercial quantities are typically produced before court and remanded pending further inquiry.
