The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) on Sunday raided a supermarket in Kollupitiya over the sale of imported packaged food products that allegedly lacked mandatory consumer-protection labelling.
CAA officers found a stock of items on the shelves missing key details required under consumer protection regulations, including importer information, the maximum retail price, batch numbers, manufacturing and expiry dates, and ingredient lists. Authorities said the products carried labels only in foreign languages, with no essential information provided in a format accessible to consumers.
The CAA has launched an investigation into the establishment and said legal action would follow on completion of inquiries. The authority warned that such practices could mislead consumers and pose risks to health and safety.
The Kollupitiya raid is the latest in a sustained CAA enforcement push this month. The agency fined a Barista coffee outlet in Bandarawela Rs.400,000 and raided traders in Arachchikattuwa earlier in June, and recently gazetted a new MRP regime for bottled drinking water under the same Consumer Affairs Authority Act.
