The Curative Health Department Polyclinic in Kompanyaveediya has been declared open after a major refurbishment, marking the first of 27 city dispensaries to be revamped under a programme led by the Colombo Municipal Council.
Mayor of Colombo Vraîe Cally Balthazaar opened the facility on Thursday, saying the renovated polyclinic now offers a more welcoming environment designed to put patients at ease both physically and mentally. The facelift “reflects the city’s commitment to creating healthcare spaces where people feel comfortable and cared for,” the Mayor said.
The transformation was driven by a community-led collaboration coordinated by a supporter identified only as Ms. Marleen, who was born in the building when it served as a maternity home decades ago. Her personal connection to the property inspired her to rally a group of backers who worked alongside the Curative Health Department team to fund and execute the renovation.
The Mayor extended special appreciation to Dr. Ganesh and the Curative Health Department staff for their work, calling the Kompanyaveediya project a template for future upgrades. “We are proud of what has been achieved here, and we hope this is just the beginning of many more improvements across our city,” she said.
The polyclinic is one of 27 dispensaries operated by the council across Colombo, with the Kompanyaveediya reopening signalling the start of a broader rollout. The CMC’s healthcare network sits alongside the Health Ministry’s larger hospital base, where state-funded improvements have included a Rs.31 billion programme to upgrade base hospitals.
