The Department of Meteorology has issued a severe lightning advisory for Thursday evening, with red alerts declared for seven districts and amber alerts for eleven more.
The Southern Province along with the Colombo, Kalutara, Monaragala, and Ratnapura districts face the highest risk. The advisory is valid until 11:00 pm.
Thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are expected at several locations after 1:00 pm, with temporary localised strong winds possible during thundershowers.
The public is urged to take precautions including staying indoors during storms, avoiding open areas and tall structures, and disconnecting electrical appliances during lightning activity.
