Maharaja Foods PLC has opened a new retail outlet under the Maharaja Super-SPAR Savemore brand in Kotahena, EconomyNext reported, marking a fresh step in a partnership with SPAR Sri Lanka aimed at building out the chain’s Colombo footprint.

The two companies signed an agreement in September last year to establish four new retail outlets in the Colombo region. The Kotahena store is one of those locations.

In a statement, the company said it continues to focus on strengthening its retail operations and delivering quality ethnic products at competitive value, supported by a “world-class shopping experience.” Maharaja Super-SPAR Savemore positions itself as a value-format store targeting working- and middle-income shoppers, with an emphasis on locally sourced ethnic and grocery lines.

Maharaja Foods, a unit of the diversified Maharaja Organisation, listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange in February 2024 with foods and retail as its anchor business. The group also operates broader media and entertainment interests through ABC and MTV, separately covered in the Maharaja-MMN expansion partnership signed in late May.

The Kotahena outlet adds to a steadily expanding modern-trade segment that includes Cargills Food City, Keells Super, Arpico Supercentre and Glomark. Both LAUGFS-backed and family-owned grocery chains have intensified Colombo-area new-store roll-outs over the past year, with operators citing rising disposable income and a partial post-Ditwah recovery in consumer foot-traffic.
