The Colombo Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday directed officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) to state their position on a request by former Minister Manusha Nanayakkara to temporarily relax his overseas travel ban.
Nanayakkara, who is currently out on bail over corruption-related allegations, filed the request before Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama. Appearing for the former minister, Attorney Asthika Devendra told court that his client needed to travel to Singapore for medical treatment and sought a temporary lifting of the court-imposed travel restriction.
After hearing submissions, the Magistrate instructed the Bribery Commission to inform court of its position on June 2. He said an appropriate order would be issued after considering submissions from both parties on that date.
Nanayakkara, a former Labour and Foreign Employment Minister, is among several former officials facing CIABOC scrutiny. He was separately questioned this month over alleged informal “undiyal” money transfers linked to overseas remittances. The travel-ban request adds a fresh procedural step to the corruption proceedings against him.
