Sri Lanka fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has successfully undergone surgery on his left hamstring and has begun rehabilitation in France, his manager confirmed on Monday.
In a statement carried by Newswire, manager Amila Kalugalage said the 23-year-old slinger had received an “open surgical hamstring repair” on the left biceps femoris muscle and was now focused on recovery. “Matheesha has successfully undergone a left biceps femoris open surgical hamstring repair and has now begun the road to recovery in France. We are grateful to Sri Lanka Cricket and Kolkata Knight Riders for their outstanding support and commitment to his wellbeing throughout this process,” Kalugalage said.
He added that Pathirana was determined to return: “He will work hard, stay focused and be back doing what he loves soon. We look forward to seeing him back on the field stronger than ever.”
The surgery follows a difficult run of fitness setbacks for one of the country’s premier death-overs bowlers. Pathirana lasted just eight deliveries on his Kolkata Knight Riders debut against Gujarat Titans before walking off with hamstring trouble on May 17 — his first competitive outing after sitting out most of the IPL 2026 season. That setback in turn followed the calf injury that ended his T20 World Cup campaign in Australia earlier in the year.
No timeline has been announced for his return to competitive cricket. Kalugalage’s statement said Pathirana would undergo rehabilitation before a decision is taken on his comeback.
