The Kadugannawa Police on Wednesday took two young men, aged 20 and 25, into custody following a violent confrontation with a bus driver in Mawanella in which a motorcycle was dragged under the bus, Newswire reported. The incident, captured in widely shared mobile-phone footage, drew nationwide attention earlier this week.
According to police, the rider and pillion passenger had chased the bus after an earlier argument with the driver, blocked the vehicle on the road near Henawala Hospital, boarded the bus and assaulted the driver inside. As the driver attempted to inch the bus forward to escape the assault, the parked motorcycle was pulled under the vehicle. Approximately 60 passengers were inside the bus at the time of the confrontation; none were injured.
The two suspects — residents of Ambepussa and Mahawela — were arrested at separate locations and were subjected to drug-screening tests at the Kandy National Hospital, a routine investigative step in road-rage and assault cases. Police said the suspects would be produced before a magistrate and that charges could include criminal intimidation, obstruction of a public service vehicle and assault.
The incident is the latest in a series of viral confrontations between private motorists and public-transport drivers, several of which have prompted commentary on broader road-civility and aggressive-driving patterns on the Colombo–Kandy corridor. The bus driver was not formally injured but was given medical assessment as a precaution.
