A 15-year-old boy has died after drowning while bathing in the Ma Oya river in Mawanella, police said on Sunday.
The teenager, a Mawanella resident, had gone to the river along with another child when the incident occurred. The body has been placed at the morgue of the Aranayaka Hospital. Mawanella Police are conducting further investigations.
The death comes the day after a 60-year-old man was killed by his own car during a driving lesson in Alupatha, Mawanella, and weeks into a sustained run of inland-water fatalities that prompted the government to set up a national drowning-prevention mechanism chaired jointly by deputy ministers Aruna Jayasekara, Madhura Senevirathna and Dinindu Hennayake.
