Met Department warns of 100mm rain across Western, Sabaragamuwa, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya

The Department of Meteorology has warned that heavy showers of around 100mm are likely at places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts on Thursday.

NewsFirst reported showers or thundershowers may occur at times across the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North Western provinces as well as the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts, with thundershowers and lightning possible across the rest of the country.

Strong winds of 40 to 50 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern and North Central provinces as well as the Hambantota and Trincomalee districts. Other areas may see fairly strong winds of 30 to 40 kmph.

The department urged the public to take precautions against temporary strong winds, lightning and thundershowers.

The advisory widens the area of risk compared with the June 2 warning, which named only the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces — Thursday’s bulletin adds Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, all districts repeatedly hit during heavy convection episodes earlier in the southwest monsoon onset.
