A newly constructed five-storey maternity and surgical ward complex at Monaragala District General Hospital, built at a cost of Rs. 857 million, will be vested with the public on Thursday, June 4, under the patronage of Minister of Health Nalinda Jayatissa.
According to the Ministry of Health, the facility houses maternity wards on the ground and first floors, women’s surgical wards on the second and third floors, and provision for four modern operating theatres equipped with advanced medical technology on the fourth floor.
The project forms part of a larger Rs. 2.9 billion investment by the Ministry to expand healthcare infrastructure in Monaragala district, which is home to more than half a million people. Monaragala General Hospital was established in 1876 and serves as the principal referral facility for the wider Uva-South administrative region, where the population has historically faced the longest average travel times to specialist obstetric and surgical care on the island.
The opening adds to the Ministry’s recent run of capacity additions targeting Uva and the southeast — including the triple-elimination paediatric clinic expansion at maternity facilities announced on June 1 — and follows continued reconstruction across the Monaragala district in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah relief commissions.
