Three individuals have been arrested by the Mullaitivu Police over an unauthorised motorcycle parade in the North in which riders were filmed travelling dangerously without helmets, Newswire reported on Saturday.

The clips, which went viral on social media, prompted Mullaitivu Police to open an investigation. Officers said the suspects were identified following an analysis of CCTV footage. Police noted that the inquiry took time because of difficulties in identifying the registration numbers of the motorcycles involved.

The suspects have been produced before court on several charges, including dangerous driving and traffic violations, police said.

Investigations are continuing.

The case follows recent traffic-safety warnings from the Department of Motor Traffic and the Department of Police about the use of social media to glamorise reckless riding and the dangers it poses on roads with mixed traffic.
