Sri Lanka has awarded a $6.04 million contract — about Rs.499.66 million excluding VAT — to India’s RS Infraprojects (Pvt) Ltd for construction of Lot A of the Mullikulam Wind Power Transmission Project, Cabinet Spokesperson Nalinda Jayatissa announced.
Lot A covers the input structure of the Mullikulam 220/33 kV collection grid substation and the construction of two 220 kV cable trays, the minister told reporters. The contract was tendered through an international competitive procurement procedure and attracted four bids.
The Cabinet approved a proposal to award the work to the lowest responsive bidder. RS Infraprojects, headquartered in India, builds high-voltage transmission and substation infrastructure across South and Southeast Asia.
The Mullikulam collection grid sits at the heart of Sri Lanka’s plans to evacuate wind generation from the north-western coastal belt, where the country’s most consistent monsoon winds combine with relatively low population density to make wind one of the cheapest renewable resources available to the system.
The award comes as the Dissanayake administration accelerates renewable procurement to ease pressure on imported fossil fuels — a policy track President Dissanayake reiterated at the Sri Lanka-Germany Business Forum on May 29, where he warned that a 25% US export-market dependency leaves the economy exposed to dollar-side shocks.
The Mullikulam grid sits within a wider Indian-financed energy footprint in Sri Lanka that includes the Trincomalee oil hub India-UAE partnership and other regional grid-interconnection work. Jayatissa did not disclose a target commissioning date for the Mullikulam transmission infrastructure.
