The Sri Lanka Navy has seized more than 2.6 tonnes of narcotics during maritime security operations conducted between January and July 2026, including over one tonne of heroin, the service has announced.
According to figures released by the Navy and reported by Ada Derana and NewsFirst, the haul comprised 1,080.894 kilograms of heroin, 590.806kg of crystal methamphetamine (known locally as “Ice”), 667.695kg of Kerala cannabis, 256.2kg of cocaine and 56.091kg of hashish.
The Navy said the drugs were recovered mainly from local multi-day fishing trawlers intercepted while allegedly being used to smuggle narcotics into the country. The seized consignments, described as carrying a substantial street value, were handed over to law enforcement authorities for further action.
The operations form part of the government’s national anti-drug initiative, “A Nation United”, the Navy said. It added that surveillance and patrols across Sri Lanka’s maritime zones were carried out jointly with the tri-forces, Sri Lanka Police, the Police Special Task Force, the Police Narcotics Bureau and foreign intelligence agencies, under the guidance of the Ministry of Defence.
The Navy said the sustained operations had dealt a significant blow to international drug trafficking networks operating in the region, and reaffirmed its commitment to securing the country’s maritime borders in support of a drug-free nation.
