The Department of Railways has announced vehicular restrictions at the Nawammahara railway crossing, near the Horape Sub Railway Station on the Main Line, for essential renovation work, Ada Derana reported.
Partial restrictions will be in effect from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, June 5, with the crossing fully closed to vehicles in the same window on Saturday, June 6. Partial restrictions resume from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 7.
The Railway Department expressed regret for the inconvenience and asked motorists to use alternative routes during the maintenance window.
The Main Line, Sri Lanka’s busiest rail corridor running from Colombo Fort through Ragama, Veyangoda, Polgahawela and on to Kandy and the hill country, has been the subject of repeated reliability concerns this year, with an express train engine derailing at Maradana on May 24 and a Main Line derailment at Kelaniya-Wanawasala on May 16. Horape is one of the heaviest commuter stations on the Colombo–Veyangoda segment.
