A Municipal Councillor representing the National People’s Power (NPP) in the Kurunegala Municipal Council, B.W. Premachandra, has resigned from his position.
Kurunegala Mayor and Attorney-at-Law Ananda Sahabandu confirmed the resignation letter was handed to him on Wednesday, Ada Derana reported.
Premachandra said he was stepping down because of the council’s failure to curb irregular governance, fraud, corruption and wastage. His resignation letter cited illegal trading, unauthorised constructions, irregular fuel usage, irregular overtime payments, officials reporting late and leaving early, and the inability to maintain cleanliness in the city.
Premachandra had been elected to the Kurunegala Municipal Council after polling the highest number of preferential votes from the Gangoda Division No. 1.
No reaction from the NPP’s local government secretariat was available at the time of reporting.
