Piliyandala Police have arrested a garage owner for allegedly assembling five high-capacity motorcycles valued at approximately Rs. 20 million that are not eligible for registration in Sri Lanka.
The arrest was made following a tip-off to the Officer-in-Charge of Piliyandala Police. Officers raided a garage located along the Piliyandala alternative road and discovered the assembly operation. One of the motorcycles found at the site is estimated to be worth approximately Rs. 6.5 million.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly claimed that four individuals had supplied the motorcycle parts and that his role was limited to assembling them.
High-capacity motorcycles that do not meet Sri Lankan registration requirements are often assembled from imported parts for resale on the black market. Such vehicles cannot be legally operated on public roads and pose safety risks as they bypass standard vehicle inspection processes.
Further investigations are underway to identify the parts suppliers and potential buyers.
