One person was injured after police opened fire during a drug-related raid in Piliyandala on the morning of July 19, Ada Derana reported.

Officers had attempted to stop and search two men travelling on a motorcycle along Weerasinghe Mawatha when one of them allegedly tried to attack an officer with a sharp weapon, according to police. Officers then opened fire in self-defence, injuring one of the suspects.

The wounded man was admitted to Kalubowila Hospital for treatment. The second suspect fled the scene on the motorcycle, and police have launched an investigation to trace and arrest him.

Police said the shooting took place as officers were carrying out a raid targeting drug activity in the area. The wounded suspect was later identified as a 24-year-old from Weediyagoda, Bandaragama, according to Island.lk, which reported that the confrontation followed an attack on a house along O.P. Perera Mawatha, Boralesgamuwa, at around 1:30 a.m. Police believe both men belong to a gang operating in the area and are working to trace the second suspect.
