Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya extended felicitations to Muslims in Sri Lanka and around the world on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha, calling on all Sri Lankans to “build a society valued with peace and harmony, guided by unity and solidarity beyond all differences,” The Island reported.
In her official message for the Hajj festival, the Prime Minister said the day commemorated “the boundless devotion to God and the noble spirit of generosity demonstrated by Prophet Ibrahim” and reflected the willingness of humanity to dedicate even its “most precious possessions for the greater good of humankind.”
“The most important lesson we must all understand is the value of rising above our differences and standing together in unity and solidarity,” Dr Amarasuriya said. “The message of Eid-ul-Adha, founded upon sharing and compassion, serves as a great example in our journey towards building a strong, peaceful, and prosperous Sri Lanka.”
She urged Sri Lankans to set aside “narrow divisions” and act with respect and kindness towards one another, wishing the community happiness, peace, prosperity and blessings.
Sri Lankan Muslims are celebrating Eid-ul-Adha on May 28 after the Colombo Grand Mosque and Moon Sighting Committee confirmed the date earlier this month. The festival follows weeks of public messaging from senior figures on inter-community unity, including President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s May 19 War Heroes’ Day commemoration pledges — themes echoed on Thursday by the National Shoora Council.
