Police have recovered 1,298 live T-56 assault rifle rounds near the Parakrama Samudra reservoir in Polonnaruwa, Newswire reported on Thursday.

The Polonnaruwa Criminal Investigation Division uncovered the cache during a special search operation along the reservoir bund near the rest house, police said.

No suspects were named and police did not disclose details of how the ammunition came to be there or who may have stored it. An investigation is under way.

The find is the second high-profile weapons discovery in less than 48 hours, following the arrest earlier this week of former parliamentarian Chandana Kathriarachchi in Piliyandala with T-56 rounds and a hand grenade. Police have not indicated whether the two cases are linked.

Parakrama Samudra, the 12th-century reservoir in North Central Province, is a prominent cultural and archaeological landmark and a popular tourist destination.
