Sri Lanka Police arrested 763 individuals on April 9 during island-wide search operations aimed at curbing crime and drug-related activities ahead of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
A total of 28,837 people were inspected across the country as part of the daily operations, according to a police statement.
The operations form part of an intensified pre-Avurudu enforcement drive. Authorities have stepped up raids on price gouging, product safety violations, and narcotics ahead of the April 13–14 festival, with the Excise Department ordering a nationwide liquor outlet closure for the two-day holiday.
